Dancing Galaxies

Prince Dance Company Dancing Galaxies Outreach Performance

Dancing Galaxies is the school performance of Prince Dance Company’s full-length production of My Empty Body is Full of Stars.

Dancing Galaxies is a 55-minute dance performance and lecture with interactive involvement from the student audience that models the motions of cosmic bodies through dance and helps to explain the phenomena of the galaxies.

Accompanying curriculum material includes motions of solar system bodies, galaxies morphologies and kinematics, gravitational interactions, and other processes that control how galaxies evolve, including star-formation, stellar deaths, and the growth of supermassive black holes.

Perspektives

Perspektives at Kahilu Theatre

Perspektives was a theatrical dance performance that took place on May 4 and May 5, 2019, at Kahilu Theatre on Hawaii Island. The show featured over 100 Prince Dance Institute students.

The show is about navigating the tricky waters of conflict resolution told through performance art. This performance-based narrative tells the story of Jacob and Claire, two teens—now bound together through their parents’ re-marriage—spiraling through conflicts that touch their inner self, their friends and family, their home environment, and their school context. It is a stork of working through real-world disputes.

The plot of Perspektives incorporated the four elements of peacebuilding (according to John Paul Lederach, professor of international peacebuilding at the University of Notre Dame) with the overarching theme that conflict can be complicated and is not necessarily always resolved. Through the show’s characters, Jacob and Claire, their peers, and the relationships around them—seen and unseen—the story follows conflict as a journey versus a contained experience.

In addition to the storyline, Perspektives included contemporary dance, acting, trapeze, musical theatre, aerial silks, and hip-hop and breakdancing and features choreography by Angel Prince, Elizabeth McDonald, Kat Reuss, Kalena Zindric, Mana Ho’opai (Hilo), and original pieces by Candie Duggan and Noelani Anderson.

Perspektives was created in partnership with West Hawai’i Mediation Center.

Future Voices

Future Voices at Kahilu Theatre

Future Voices is a multi-media theatrical dance performance that was presented on May 5 and May 6, 2018, at Kahilu Theatre.

Written by students of Prince Dance Institute, the theatrical aspect of the show was developed over the course of several spoken word workshops led by Angel Prince, and O’ahu-based spoken word poet Jonathan Sypert. The result was an inspiring and thought-provoking performance of song, dance, theatre, and spoken word.

Future Voices featured choreography from instructors Angel Prince, Elizabeth Brawner, Kat Reuss, Leia Lawrence, Mana Ho’opai, dramatic work by Kendyll Howard, and music with Candie Duggan.

The performance also includes the PDI students’ spoken word pieces as the underlying narrative to each segment. Original costumes by Karen Zindric, original music by Jonathan Sypert.

The show is a beautiful blending of PDI students’ voices with dance, aerial, musical, and theatrical pieces and was an inspiring project for the students and faculty of Prince Dance Institute.

The students created spoken word pieces inspired by the prompts:

    • What is important to you?
    • What kind of world do you want to live in?
    • What needs to change?
